Traditional Wood Mounted Rubber Stamps

Rubber stamps have been around for a long long time, and so has the logging industry, and in a way that might not easily come to mind without some clues, the two are intimately related.

The reason is this; Way back when rubber stamps first began there were no self inking or pre inked stamps like there are today, in fact there were only wood mounted rubber stamps made with a handle for use with a seperate ink pad.

That first clue is a pretty good one because wood mounted indicates logs might well be involved.

So let’s take a look at logs and logging and the trees that grow and eventually wind up, in part, as rubber stamps, and then we’ll get back to more of what you can expect if you do indeed want a wood mounted rubber hand stamp and you decide to come to Rubber Stamp Champ.

Logging arose when settlers first started arriving in Jamestown in 1607 and since then has formed a booming economic structure. Logging became incredibly important when the need for ship building became more frequent. In fact, in the 1790s, New England was exporting 36 million feet of pine boards and at least 300 ship masts per year.

The logging industry was so busy and in demand that the New England area regularly shipped lumber and products elsewhere and with the start of the Industrial Revolution the demand for lumber in general spiked. During the 1830s, Bangor, Maine, became the world’s biggest lumber shipping port in the United States.

Life for loggers was certainly not the easiest and some described it as simply rugged. These men worked in harsh and dangerous conditions with little to no access to water, warm meals, and clean clothes. Not to mention that they were away from their families and living in damp, dirty camps close to their work sites.

It wasn’t uncommon for these men to catch diseases and other things such as lice due to their work conditions. But one thing is for sure, they were extremely hard workers, paving a way for future men to earn money and take care of their families as well.

Today, with better equipment and probably a tad less suffering on the part of loggers and their families, trees are felled, trucked, cut up and put to use in everything from chairs and tables, to new home construction to the printed materials that so annoyingly come to your mailbox daily even though all you ever do is throw them right in the trash.

Fortunately, rubber hand stamps mounted on wood are way more toward the table and chair end of the usefulness spectrum as it relates to products made from trees, than is junk mail.

In an interesting way, even though rubber stamp technology has evolved far beyond the traditional wood mounted variety, we still make thousands of them, because in some ways they can’t be replaced by technology, since custom sizes and shapes can be made of wood in an almost unlimited way, where the newer self inkers are convenient but limited by a set number of sizes.

At Rubber Stamp Champ we make more custom rubber stamps online daily than anyone else in America, and while you won’t hear the sounds of large trees coming down anywhere near our place, if you did happen to walk in, for sure, back in the shop, you would hear the chop saw running as our stamp makers are custom cutting wood blocks for stamp orders as we speak.
